2020 Bordeaux En Primeur
The campaign has started in the first week of May and will likely be finished by the last 2 weeks of June, with the big guns releasing last. On this page - further below - we will be adding new Bordeaux 2020 wines as and when they are being released. Please check back here regularly, let us know in advance which wines take your interest and make sure to sign up to our En Primeur 2020 offers.
The 2019 campaign
Overall, last year’s campaign was a success. Quality was very high and prices were just about right. We sold out on our most priced allocations and indeed, secondary market prices went up for the in-demand wines with the biggest price increases seen by Lafleur, Petrus, Clinet, Le Pin and Mouton Rothschild. However, it is important to note that only a relatively small amount of wines actually sold out.
Last year was an exceptional campaign as it came in the middle of the pandemic, most critics had not yet released their scores and therefore prices had to be very attractive to make the campaign work. And they were.
This year the economic backdrop is more stable and some expect the Bordelais may want to test the market with the 2020 vintage. However, so far most prices are very close to the 2019's. The most prominent release so far - Cheval Blanc - came out at only +3%, which is a very fair price. Pavie, another big name, released at the same price as 2019.
On quality, James Suckling says “After tasting more than 400 barrel samples from the 2020 vintage, I can 100% confirm that it is another great year for Bordeaux”. The reports are starting to come out, as of yet it is too early to give a wider view on the quality of the wines, but that will change in May. Please check back here for updates. So far, this vintage seems to have favoured Merlot over Cabernet Sauvignon.
Production is 30% less than 2019 and with ongoing stock retention by the Chateaux, securing the desired wines may not be easy. As ever, buying not just the most sought after wines will help to secure your favourites. That’s also how we secure stock with the Bordeaux Negociants. Therefore, please let us know in advance which wines take your interest and sign up to our En Primeur 2020 offers.
Some chateaux to watch: Margaux, Lafleur, Lafite, Trotanoy, Canon, Figeac, Carmes Haut Brion, Brane Cantenac, Meyney, Leoville Poyferre.
