Catalunya is located south of Barcelona. This region produces wines known largely for their full, dusty reds made primarily from Grenache and Carignan cultivars. The best of these wines age for a minimum of five years before release and some include Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for additional complexity.
In our view the best wines of the region come from Montsant, a more recent DO awarded to the zone surrounding the hilly Priorat region with in comparison to Priorat more reasonably priced wines, and Priorat which produces super concentrated and thrilling powerhouses.
Rene Barbier's Clos Mogador, Clos Erasmus, Finca Dofi and Alvaro Palacios are amongst the most prestigous producers here.
